Bulk Systems

Domestic Bulk Tank Service

(Water Heating, Heating, Cooking, Commercial and Etc. Propane uses.) 250, 500, 1,000 or a combination of tank sizes making a system.

  1. Set tank level on two concrete pads 12" to 18" wide by 28" to 30" long. Pads should be reinforced with steel rods or wire mesh. See illustration later in this Chapter.
  2. Use two stage regulation on all 250, 500, 1,000 gallon or larger systems. This will reduce surging, making it possible to use smaller tubing between tank and second stage regulator. This gives better regulation and adequate propane supply to appliances. All new tank sets after June 1997 are required to use a two stage regulation system.
  3. Set tank according to NFPA Pamphlet 58, 3-2.2.1, see illustration of distances below. See note on 1,000 gallon container – 25 foot distance can be reduced to 10 foot if a container under 1,200 gallon is at least 25 feet from a container of more than 125 gallon. RE: NFPA Pamphlet 58, 3-2.2.2.1
  4. Recommend high-pressure regulators of 10 to 15 pounds per square inch setting for the first stage regulator from the tank. It is advisable to not only exceed the maximum BTU appliance load, but allow for some future load that may be added at a later date.
  5. Recommend low pressure regulators to match the maximum appliance load that can deliver up to 14" water column pressure. It is advisable to not only exceed the maximum BTU appliance load, but allow for some future load that may be added at a later date.
  6. Two-stage integral regulators may be used, but not recommended due to the increased line size required and may experience surging if all appliances operate simultaneously.
  7. Test for leaks, operating pressure between regulators and to appliances, and lock up. See Testing Procedures, Chapter 6.
